Public Opinion Survey on Universal SuffrageBack

Pro-democracy Legislative Councillors commissioned Prof. Robert Chung of the Hong Kong University to carry out an opinion survey on Hong Kong people's views on universal suffrage. The survey was conducted between 26 and 29 May, consisting of 511 successful random telephone interviews. All figures have been weighted according to provisional figures obtained from the Census and Statistics Department regarding the gender-age distribution of the Hong Kong population at the end of 2005. The standard error is less than +/- 4.4%. The results are as follows:


1. Do you think Hong Kong has sufficient conditions to implement universal suffrage?
  Yes 58.7%
  No 28.3%
  Don't know/hard to say 13.0%

2. Do you agree the Chief Executive should be elected by universal suffrage as soon as possible?
  Agree 57.2%
  Half-half 18.6%
  Disagree 19.6%
  Don't know/hard to say 4.6%

3. Do you agree all Legislative Councillors should be elected by universal suffrage as soon as possible?
  Agree   65.0%
  Half-half   13.8%
  Disagree   13.4%
  Don't know/hard to say   7.8%


4. Do you agree all District Councillors should be elected by universal suffrage as soon as possible?
  Agree 67.9%
  Half-half 12.7%
  Disagree  12.0%
 Don't know/hard to say  7.3%
