Regarding people's appraisal of the overall performance of the HKSAR Government, the latest figures revealed that 47% were dissatisfied, whereas 18% were satisfied. Of the 5 specific indicators, over 40% of the respondents were dissatisfied with the government's performance in improving people's livelihood, developing democracy, maintaining economic prosperity, and protecting human rights and freedom, with corresponding dissatisfaction rates of 49%, 48%, 46% and 44%. People remained to be most satisfied with the government's handling of its relation with the Central Government, as 38% were satisfied, and 30% were dissatisfied. It was the only item with more people satisfied than dissatisfied. Finally, 35% were dissatisfied with the overall performance of the LegCo members, while 16% were satisfied. |
Robert Ting-Yiu Chung, Director of Public Opinion Programme, observed: "The survey shows that Tung Chee-hwa's popularity has gone back to its upward trend again, which began in mid-May but suffered a short break after the July 1 Rally. His latest rating is 48.3 marks, which is the highest since mid-October 2002. Tung is obviously benefiting from the more relaxed political atmosphere, as well as the positive effect due to the resignation of a senior official under the accountability system. However, Tung's popularity is still on the low side, as only 20% gave him a vote of confidence. The popularity of the SAR Government and the Legco members on the whole, has also slightly improved. Although their satisfaction rates are still on the down side, various dissatisfaction rates have subsided." |
