Regarding people's appraisal of the overall performance of the HKSAR Government, the latest figures revealed that 46% were dissatisfied, whereas 13% were satisfied. Of the 5 specific indicators, almost half of the respondents were dissatisfied with the government's performance in improving people's livelihood, developing democracy, and maintaining economic prosperity, with corresponding dissatisfaction rates of 48%, 47% and 45%. On the protection of human rights and freedom, 38% were dissatisfied. People remained to be most satisfied with the government's handling of its relation with the Central Government, as 42% were satisfied, and 20% were dissatisfied. It was the only item with more people satisfied than dissatisfied. Finally, 31% were dissatisfied with the overall performance of the LegCo members, while 14% were satisfied. |
Robert Ting-Yiu Chung, Director of Public Opinion Programme, analyzed: "The popularity of CH Tung recovered a bit after the Chinese New Year, as his disapproval rate dropped back to 63%, which is still a very high figure. On the other hand, people's dissatisfaction with the SAR Government has also continued to recede. However, in the areas of developing democracy and protecting human rights and freedom, dissatisfaction was on the rise again. One important point to note is that SARG's usual strength in handling its relation with the Central Government seems to have declined, even though it is still at a fairly positive level, probably due to factors related to constitutional review." |
