HKU POP SITE releases a column article concluding results of the "TV Programme Appreciation Index Survey" in the five years pastBack

Press Release on February 27, 2003

The "HKU POP SITE" (http://hkupop.pori.hk) of the Public Opinion Programme (POP) at the University of Hong Kong today releases in its "POP Column" a bilingual article entitled "A Quick Tour of Quality Television Programmes". Written by Robert Ting-Yiu Chung, Director of the Public Opinion Programme at HKU, the article roughly summarized the major trends observed in the "Television Programme Appreciation Index Surveys" conducted in the last 5 years (1998-2002). This article will also be published in the souvenir programme booklets to be distributed at tomorrow's "Appreciation Index Survey Best Television Awards Presentation". Moreover, at the request of RTHK, the Hong Kong Economic Journal has also carried a shortened form of this article in their newspaper today. The copyright of the column article is entirely open, and anyone can re-print it in whole or in part.

The "Appreciation Index Survey Best Television Awards Presentation" was first held in 1998, and is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. In view of this, RTHK has invited Robert Ting-Yiu Chung, Director of POP, to write an article to summarize the survey results obtained in the past 5 years. Chung pointed out in the article that most of the quality programmes which appeared on the top of the lists are news and current affairs programmes, as well as biographic documentaries, while long drama series rarely made their way to the top. This somewhat indicated the audience's taste in appreciating television progammes. Concluding his experience in the five year period, Chung believed that "the concepts and methodology embedded in these AI surveys can, in fact, be extended into other entertainment and artistic domains, including movies and film arts, advertisements, radio programmes, and all performing arts."

The award presentation ceremony will be held tomorrow (February 28, 2003, Friday) at 5 pm, at Habour City Metropolis in Hunghom. Survey findings in detail are accessible from the websites of POP and RTHK starting tomorrow, they will also be published in the souvenir programme booklets which will be distributed tomorrow at the venue.

Please note that everything carried in the POP Site does not represent the stand of the University of Hong Kong.
