HKU POP SITE today releases its first column articleBack

Press Release on January 17, 2003

The "HKU POP SITE" (http://hkupop.pori.hk) of the Public Opinion Programme (POP) at the University of Hong Kong today releases its first article in the newly created "POP Column". Entitled "Anchored to the World, Construct a Better China" and written in both English and Chinese, the article is the first commentary written by Robert Ting-Yiu Chung, Director of Public Opinion Programme, since the Polling Incident happened in July 2000. The article mainly focused on the desired positioning of Hong Kong, as well as that of the "POP Column". It can thus be taken as a foreword to the establishment of the "POP Column".

According to Chung, CE Tung Chee-hwa's repeated emphasis on Hong Kong's reliance on the backing of the Mainland is only a superficial solution to Hong Kong's long-term development. It failed to grasp the public mood and Hong Kong's advantages. "Shall we keep counting on the backing of the Mainland instead of making our own foothold in the world, we will not be doing any good even to mother China herself," he wrote.

All articles published in the "POP Column" are open for free surfing and downloading. Robert Chung would be the main author at the beginning, but in due course, other experts and academics will be invited to contribute articles on different topics related to "public opinion".

Please note that everything carried in the POP Site does not represent the stand of the University of Hong Kong. Dr Robert Ting-Yiu Chung, Director of Public Opinion Programme, is responsible for everything posted in the POP Site, except for column articles which represent the stand of their authors.
