Press Release on May 14, 2003

The "HKU POP SITE" (http://hkupop.pori.hk) of the Public Opinion Programme (POP) at the University of Hong Kong today releases in its "POP Column" a bilingual article entitled "The Popularity of Tung Chee-hwa from All Angles". Written by Robert Ting-Yiu Chung, Director of the Public Opinion Programme at HKU, the article mainly discussed, using public opinion data, the support level of CE Tung Chee-hwa across different demographic groups.

The article pointed out that Tung's overall popularity has touched on the danger zone in late September 2001. By March this year, a credibility crisis has appeared. Outlining the demographic features of Tung's supporters and opposers, the article analyzed the trend in Tung's popularity rating scored across different demographic groups. According to Chung, "Tung is not just experiencing negative popularity, he is facing a credibility crisis". According to Chung, Tung can choose between the easy and difficult options, but "the worst scenario would be for him to work with only his 800 allies, or not work at all".

This article was invited and reported by South China Morning Post, an abridged version in Chinese is published concurrently by Hong Kong Economic Journal, while a large amount of opinion data has been appended to the on-line version.
