1.

Since 1992, the Public Opinion Programme (POP) at the University of Hong Kong has been conducting studies, mainly election and opinion polls, in Macau, in order to map its changing public sentiment. So far, the following studies have been conducted:

  • 1992: Telephone survey on Macau Legislative Assembly Election
  • 1992: Exit poll on Macau Legislative Assembly Election
  • 1993: Exit poll on Macau Municipal Assembly Election
  • 1996: Exit poll on Macau Legislative Assembly Election
  • 1999: Telephone survey on Macau Handover
  • 2000: Telephone survey on Macau Handover
  • 2001: Exit poll on Macau Legislative Assembly Election
  • 2001: First Anniversary telephone survey on Macau Handover
  • 2002: Second Anniversary telephone survey on Macau Handover

All surveys are conducted by POP independently, even if there may be sponsors or collaborators. POP's usual practice is to retain the final say, and bear the final responsibility, in all research designs, unaffected by any government, sponsor, or collaborator.

3.

After the handovers of Hong Kong and Macau, the public mood of the two societies are becoming closer and closer. It can be expected that Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macau, Zhuhai, and the entire Pearl River Delta, will be rapidly integrated into a new economic and cultural entity. In the long run, therefore, it would be a multiple-win situation if some kinds of common social indicators would be developed in the region, to monitor social changes. POP has been conducting opinion studies in Macau for more than ten years. Our aim is to foster the development of scientific opinion surveys in the region, and to provide data for comparative studies in future.
