POP Express Vol. 34 From the Editor - Tenth Anniversary of June FourthBack

June 1999

June is always an unsettling month. Within weeks after the commemoration of the June 4th Incident, people begin to gear up for the celebration of the Handover. This year, marking the Tenth Anniversary of June 4th and the second anniversary of Handover, Hong Kong witnesses unprecedented development in both its economy and the rule of law. June is probably a good reflection of the Hong Kong mind.

Other than recording various social indicators, we are publishing in this issue, for the first time, a series of almost 50 popularity ratings for the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of the Patriotic Democratic Movement in China, collected over the past seven years. Together with other data collected in previous anniversaries, we are inputting a semi-colon to the series. Our next move depends on the public sentiment.
