POP Express Vol. 33 From the Editor - Immigration of Hong Kong Permanent Residents' Children in ChinaBack

Late last month, the SAR Government announced its estimate of the number of mainlanders with the right of abode in Hong Kong, due to the latest ruling of Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal. The Chief Executive then made a swift and 'resolute' decision to request the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for an interpretation of the relevant provisions in the Basic Law. The shock across the whole society in respect to the rule of law was unprecedented. Perhaps our next issue of POP Express might be able to tell more. The relevant Extra Issue carried in this issue might have given an early hint.

This issue of POP Express has otherwise concentrated on the findings from our more regular surveys, including people's evaluation of the SAR Government, their satisfaction of current social conditions, their rating of the Chief Executive, and the like. As a special feature, we have published a comprehensive set of figures relating to people's confidence in the future of Hong Kong, and the "one country, two systems" formulation collected in the past four years. We hope this set of data would be useful to the more serious readers.
