POP Express Vol. 32 From the Editor - The Popularity of Zhu Rongji and Ma Ying-jeou Back

April 1999

The visit of Premier Zhu Rongji to North America has pushed his popularity among Hong Kong people to record high. His popularity rating of 76 marks is much higher than any of those scored by local politicians. His main rival is Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou across the Strait, who visited Hong Kong some time earlier. This happy competition is probably a blessing to the entire Chinese race.

Against Zhu and Ma's ratings, it would be interesting to note the latest ratings obtained by local political groups, Legislative Councillors, and the Chief Executive, especially after he re-appointed Anson Chan as Chief Secretary. All these are recorded in this issue of POP Express together with the latest social Indicators, freedom indicators, and findings from other tracking surveys.
