Our survey shows that television and newspapers continue to be people's main sources of news, followed by radio, and then the internet. People's appraisal of the news media in general has not changed much over the past six months. However, their satisfaction with the radio has dropped after reaching a high point, and their dissatisfaction with news magazines continues to climb, to another record high since this survey series started in 1993. It is high time that our news magazines reflected on themselves what should be done. Another observation of our latest survey is that the importance of the internet continues to grow, slowly but steadily. One in ten people now take internet as their main source of news.
The credibility rating of the local news media continues to drop in the past six months, now very near to the previous low recorded three years ago. The recent paparazzi case of a singer changing clothes has apparently taken its toll. Compared to six months ago, those who said the media had given full play to the freedom of speech has not changed much, but those who said the media had misused press freedom, and being irresponsible in their reporting have surged by 5 percentage points. The former percentage is now near the record high of 75% recorded in November 1998. As for self-censorship, compared to six months ago, those who thought the media had scruples when criticizing the Central Government have gone up by 7 percentage points, but those who said the media had scruples when criticizing the HKSAR Government, or had practiced self-censorship on the whole have not changed much. The question of how to preserve press freedom without it being misused or abused, still remains to be an important question Hong Kong society has to face.
Survey shows that television and newspapers continue to be people's main sources of news, followed by radio, and then the internet. People's appraisal of the news media in general has dropped a little over the past six months, mainly due to growing dissatisfaction with the print media. Over the last six months, people's satisfaction with newspapers dropped by 7 percentage points, while their dissatisfaction with news magazines climbed to 42%, which is record high since this survey series started in 1993. Exactly how our news magazines can improve themselves to gain credibility has become a very pressing problem.
The credibility rating of the local news media in general has dropped significantly over the last five months, the reason may be traced from a number of indicators. On the positive side, people's satisfaction with press freedom has increased, those who considered the news media had given full play to the freedom of speech have also increased, while those who considered the media had practised self-censorship have dropped. On the negative side, however, those who believed the news media had misused or abused the freedom of press have increased significantly, so were those who said the media had been irresponsible in making their reports. The latter actually registered the biggest change in terms of magnitude across all indicators. In other words, the decrease in the media's general credibility might well have been due to their perceived abuse of press freedom and their production of irresponsible reports.
The credibility rating of the local news media on the whole has increased significantly over the last three months, while people's satisfaction with the freedom of the press and those who said the media has behaved responsibly in producing stories have both increased slightly. People's general evaluation, however, still remains two-sided, as most people believe that the media has given full play to the freedom of speech, but has also abused that freedom some of the times. On the other hand, the number of respondents who said the media practices self-censorship has significantly increased, mainly because they thought the media has become apprehensive when criticizing the Central Government.
People's appraisal of the news media has remained the same over the past six months. Television and newspapers continue to be people's main sources of news, followed by radio, and then the internet. In terms of satisfaction, television continues to top the list, followed by radio, newspapers, and then magazines which are always at the lower end.
People's appraisal of the local news media in terms of their responsibility in news reporting and overall credibility has dropped slightly over the last three months, but their satisfaction of Hong Kong's press freedom and the way the press have handled it has not changed much. About 65% said the media have given full play to the freedom of speech, but roughly the same number said they have misused it. It should be noted that although 40% both ways considered the media have and have not practiced self-censorship, 60% said the media became apprehensive when criticizing the Central Government, which is in sharp contrast to the 60% who said the media have no such hesitation in criticizing the SAR Government.
People's overall appraisal of the news media, both in terms of satisfaction and credibility, has not changed much over the year past. Our latest survey shows that their appraisal of the media's practice of press freedom continues to be two-sided. That the media have given full play to the freedom of speech, but that they have misused or abused press freedom, are both majority views. People are generally satisfied with the degree of press freedom in Hong Kong, but only a minority considers the news media responsible in their reporting. Regarding self-censorship, people's perception is divided. Most feel that the media become apprehensive when criticizing the Central Government, but few think that they become apprehensive when criticizing the SAR Government. On specific types of news media, television and newspapers continue to be people's main sources of news, followed by radio, which is increasingly challenged by the internet. In terms of trust and satisfaction, television continues to top the list, with magazines always on the low.
People's rating of the overall credibility of the news media, as well as their satisfaction with Hong Kong's press freedom, have increased significantly over the past 3 months. However, their appraisal of the media's practice of press freedom continued to be two-sided. That the media have given full play to the freedom of speech, and that they have misused or abused press freedom, are both majority views, although the negative view has subsided somewhat over the last 3 months. Regarding the media's degree of responsibility and self-censorship, people's perception was divided, with slightly more people on the negative side. Many people felt that the media became apprehensive when criticizing the Central Government, but few thought that they became apprehensive when criticizing the SAR Government. This pattern has persisted since the handover.
Our latest survey shows that people's dissatisfaction with Hong Kong's press freedom continued to subside, after its surge due to the departure of some outspoken radio talk show hosts. However, satisfaction rate continued to fluctuate at around 50%, meaning that many more people have opted for a 'half-half' attitude. People's appraisal of the news media continued to be double-sided. That the media have given full play to the freedom of speech, and that they have misused or abused press freedom, are both majority views. The negative view, however, has increased significantly over the last 3 months, probably due to Legco election stories. The credibility of the local news media in general, however, has not changed much.
Our latest survey shows that people's dissatisfaction with Hong Kong's press freedom has subsided, after its surge due to the departure of some outspoken radio talk show hosts. Consistently more than half are satisfied. People's appraisal of the news media continued to be double-sided. That the media have given full play to the freedom of speech, and that they have misused or abused the freedom of press, are both majority views. A positive sign is that those who said the media have misused or abused the freedom have dropped significantly over the last 3 months. There is little doubt that people's next round of appraisal would depend on how our news media report election news.
people's appraisal of the news media continued to be of dual nature, as those who said our news media have given full play to the freedom of speech, and those who said they have misused or abused the freedom of press, both exceed 60%. Slightly more people consider the news media to be irresponsible, rather than responsible, in their news reporting though. One important point to note is that people's dissatisfaction rate of press freedom has increased significantly in the past 3 months, probably due to the spill-over effect of the departure of some outspoken radio talkshow hosts.
In terms of the degree of responsibility shown by local news reporting, people's appraisal of our local news media plunged in the first three years after the handover. At the beginning of 2000, negative opinions outweighed positive ones by almost 40 percentage points. The margin has since then narrowed, it was 9 percentage points in our latest survey. Regarding the media's handling of freedom of speech and press, there have always been two strong opinions. On the one hand, many people considered our news media to have given full play to the freedom of speech, but many, although slightly less, people said they had misused or abused the freedom of press. This reflects the diversity of our media, both in terms of variety and professionalism.
On the other front, people's satisfaction with the degree of press freedom has gone back to the level registered before Antony Leung's car purchase incident and the SARS outbreak, while the credibility rating of the news media has remained high.
People's satisfaction with the freedom of the press, and their rating of our news media's credibility, have both gone up, probably because they were happy with the roles played by the media in reporting Antony Leung's car purchase incident and the SARS outbreak.
The death of Princess Diana has touched the soul of millions of British people, while at the same time raised the issue of whether tracking methods should be used in reporting news. According to our latest surveys, only one-quarter of Hong Kong people approved such methods.A sizable 44%, however, believed Hong Kong media practised self-censorship, 68% believed the media were reluctant to criticize China. Such a high expectation on the media, coupled with a large market for low grade reporting, reflects yet another double standard of the Hong Kong public
people were generally more satisfied with the electronic media than the printed media. An average of 68% were satisfied with television, followed by 52% with radio, 43% with newspapers, and then 11% with magazines, a rate very low by any standard. Generally speaking, however, people were fairly satisfied with the overall performance of the news media, as 63% of the respondents, on average, said they were satisfied, while only 4% said they were not.
